10 Ways Writing a Book Can Help You Grow Your Business

As a business owner, marketing yourself, your brand, and your vision are top priorities to growing your client base. But as you do so, considering additional ways in which you can get “out there” and expand your reach is always beneficial.

In this way, let’s consider a few things about writing books. First is the value writing a book can have on your business, second is the importance and advantages of writing a book, and third is the various ways writing a book can help your business grow.

While writing a book may seem daunting, I know you have what it takes. You already proved this when you stepped outside of your comfort zone to start your business!

So then, what exactly is a “book”? A book does not have to be a big-wig best seller published through traditional means. You do not have to be a “writer” or have published anything before to successfully write and market a book for the benefit of your business.

A book can be anything of length (i.e. something longer than a blog post) about whatever topic you’re passionate about. It can be an eBook, a short-form book, or even a blog series used to market your business and build your client base.

Think of it as a “document,” for lack of a better word, that allows you to better serve your current clients by providing valuable content and to inform potential clients about what you do and the services you provide.

And one you can add to your marketing toolbox for the ultimate expansion of your business.

But what, you may wonder, is the actual value of adding this additional task to your already filled calendar?

As a business owner, writing a book increases your credibility by giving you a unique platform from which you can showcase your business knowledge and experience.

1. By dissecting confusing aspects of why you do what you do and why you offer the services you offer, you can assure potential clients you have the necessary experience to help them in the ways they want.

2. By describing and outlining your experiences, you can help other business owners realize what it took to get where you’re at and inspire them to get where they want. Revealing these things about yourself makes you real, relatable, and approachable.

3. Writing a book shows your audience that you understand where they are and that you are capable of helping them find viable solutions to their needs.

4. Writing a book gives credence to your expertise and passion by showing and telling how you know what you know and why it is you are passionate about doing what you do.

5. Writing a book increases the ways current and potential clients can respect your journey and thereby come to confidently find the help and guidance they need from you.

6. Writing a book provides you with a unique level of self-confidence that few other things will. It’s a personal accomplishment you can—and should be—very proud of. You did it, you wrote a book! How many others in your circle, either personal or business, can say that same thing?

7. Becoming a published author puts you on a different playing field, period. It helps you see how much you are actually capable of and as a business owner, it’s a stepping stone to bigger and greater things on your business journey.

8. Writing a book helps you strengthen your brand voice (the style & personality of your business) and to clarify your business model (the ways in which you operate your services).

Explaining the how’s and why’s of your business model to others often exposes ways in which you can make improvements. Sharing who you are and what you do also exposes who you are not and what you don’t do.

9. Writing a book also gives you increased visibility by allowing you to include info about it in your email signature, on info cards or flyers at restaurants, public restrooms, and with clients for them to pass on to their friends and family.

10. Having book info to include in your bio for vendor applications at business conferences shows you are dedicated to your passion for the niche community you are striving to support and bolster.

While it may seem that growing your business and writing a book are separate entities of focus, they are actually tightly intertwined and, when manipulated as such, can powerfully leverage your and your business.

So, get excited! Don’t be shy! When you do get overwhelmed, remember that your audience is eager to learn more about you and your business, and prospective clients are waiting to meet you!
